This large metal and wire cake was the center piece at the Farm Chicks Show last weekend. It was very cool and made me wanna do some metal creations myself! You can only get the jest of how large it was...I only had my hubby's small camera to use. I have lost my battery charger for my camera and had to go with the backup. But it is just not "my camera."

Yep, this is me with Jo Packman, the founder of Where Women Create. I bought the book when it came out and have bought every issue of the magazine ever since. I told her I was gonna be in her magazine someday...she said "Send me your information." So whenever I get settled and get to have a studio again I'm gonna do just that! I had to ordered the new book, "Inspiration" since she ran out at the show. But it will come in the mail to me signed by her. BTW, I am not towering over her in the photo, she is sitting down for the book signings.

Rolane sold some of my crowns...I forgot to get a picture of them in her booth. I only had a few left and with recently moving it was just not possible to get more made. Rolane's show is coming up in July in Rathdrum, Idaho. Great outdoor show at her farm there. My crowns will be there, providing I can get more made.

Serena is very sweet and personable. I finally bought her first cook book at the show and got her to sign it. I like that it has "stuff" other than just recipes in it. Pretty book. This photo was taken at the end of the day...I look pretty thrashed after all of that walking around and trying to get into booths. My bangs curled up as they tend to do at times. The show was very crowded, which is good, means they had good stuff there. I did manage to find some treasures; an old wood corn cob scraper (nice patina), a very old apple corer, a great old print that says "Christ is the Head of this House," -very Victorian, old jars lids (always looking for these), bone handled fork, and a few more smaller treasures. I had fun, as always even going alone. Thanks, Serena for all of your hard work.

Boy was this place great! The decor was right up my alley. All antiques and old pictures. It has a steam boat feeling inside with the white lights all around the ceiling. Noah got a free ice cream sundae...this kid had ice cream times on his birthday and then an ice cream cake his mom made after the pizza party. We do love ice cream in our family.

We took Noah and went on a drive around The Garden of the Gods, a rock formation park, on his 13th birthday. We got food at Subway fries at McDonald's and then a Blizzard for Noah and took it with us. Noah was a pleasure to spend time with. He loves the outdoors and guns. He misses the trees in Idaho.
But aren't two of my favorite men adorable? We had a lovely time together. Hard to believe Noah is 13.
This was part of our time spent in Colorado Springs.

Old Wood Rack

This was a piece a friend was tossing out. It was missing some slats, so we got creative to fix that issue. What did we do? Well, we started looking around this place for something to put in the space of missing slats.
Ahha! About two years ago I had an old trunk sitting around that was in really bad shape, torn metal and such. Tim wanted me throw it out..."what?" I said, "throw it out?" "you are kidding, right?" I never throw anything out, especially is it has anything old on it. I took that trunk apart and saved the metal and pieces of wood. Knowing someday it would come in handy for something...and it did. So Tim took those pieces from the old trunk and laid them out on the rack...they fit perfectly! Amazing!
Well, this rack had a purpose...to hold some of my baskets. So Tim hung it up in the back dining room above a Hoosier cabinet and out of the way. It's been up since Christmas. I did not have the right size hooks for the baskets, so it was never used. Then in January we began to talk about selling this house. Without ever being used, he took it down yesterday. It now sits outside of the house we are moving too waiting to be hung again and this time maybe it will get used. My ceilings in the new house are not very high, so not sure where it will go. It may have to wait until the next house...which I hope is a farmhouse! Still dreaming...of that farmhouse where grandchildren can run and play, I can have my chickens, grow a large garden, and have gatherings...lots of gatherings!

Stove of Love

This great old stove was an anniversary gift to me from my sweet love, Tim. Thus the name 'stove of love.' We had been dating for two months as of February 2, 1995 when I saw this stove in a yard of one of his friends, loved it, so he bought it for me.
It has been sitting in the dining room for 15 years now and has never been hooked up to use. As time has gone by my tastes have gotten more primitive and I want a black cast iron (maybe with chrome detailing) wood burning stove, more late 1800's era. So the descision was made to sell this 'stove of love.' It is listed on craigslist for $200.00. Seems to have all of its parts, but we have never tried it out, so not sure how well it works. We have had to let go of a lot of things with the sale of our house and this is one of them. We are moving into a much smaller house. Hopefully, someone will love it and put it to good use. Goodbye, 'stove of love.'

We took a chilly walk around the boardwalk on Christmas Eve...and I do mean chilly! I wore my recently found red cape and so glad I did. The part of my legs that were not covered by the coat got so cold. Anyway...we enjoyed the lighted up boats and docks on Lake Coeur d' Alene. Last year at this time we would not have been able to do this as there was too much snow, so it was nice that it was snowless on this night.

A photos of our 1940's style Christmas tree...using all ornaments from that era or older. No flash, so it is kinda darkish...but you get the idea. I did use little white lights instead of big colored bulbs...as they would have in the 40's. But I did not have any when I put up the tree, except some old ones that I did not trust-as far as fire safety. But I got some new ones that look like old ones at the thrift a couple of days ago...so next year I will use the colored lights. The lights along the top of the curtain are little bells made using beads...they are so cute.

Here is a view of the three candle set from Walgreen's. The old clock belonged to Tim's grandparents and was gracioulsy handed down to us by his mother a few months ago. We love it! The lamp with white shade was passed down to me from my father a few years ago. It had been his father's and his father's before him. My grandfather used to do his school work by the light of it. His mother sewed and mended clothing by the light of it. Somewhere along the lines they electrified it for modern use. The bell shaped item sitting on the old books to the right was a curious item I picked up at an antique sale a few months ago. Since I am a bell admirer I had to have it...not really sure what it is...but it fits in with my home beautifully. This view speaks of a softer, more harmonious Christmas of days gone by...don't you think?

I bought these darling bells a few years back at a yard sale. I did not know at that time what they were made of...but I love bells, so it did not matter. They have a very nice jingle to them. I did get a better look at them when I got home and realized they are made from tin can lids...how clever. Recently some older craft magazines came into the thrift store and I found the instructions for making these in one of the issues. They are called "Oil Can Porch Bells." But I say they are Christmas bells. So I have asked my sweet hubby to help me make some...I think this may be a project for us when the grandchildren get here this weekend. The grandkids love to be in Papa's shop helping him make things.

This is what I did with all of the tomatoes that we rescued from the freeze. My back dining room table is covered with them. More sauce to come as they ripen. The only thing left in the garden is the carrots.

Learning a new art

I took a Copperplate (a type of calligraphy) class all day yesterday from Susen Fay in Sandpoint, Idaho. I have been wanting to learn to do calligraphy for a very long time and finally bit the bullet and took this class. The drive up to Sandpoint was lovely. Being at Susen's home was great too. We watched the deer come and go from her yard, as well as a gagle of turkeys. It is a truly beautiful setting.
Now I need to practice, practice, practice in order to get accomplished on Copperplate.

Green Tomatoes-not fried-but nearly frozen

These four baskets are full of tomatoes that Brennah I picked early one evening when we heard it was going to freeze overnight again. Tim had been covering them, but I am not so sure they were fairing well. So we went out in the dark and pulled up all of the plants and gathered these tomatoes off of them. Now to let them ripen and more tomato sauce will be made. This tomatoes many will probably yield about 15 quarts.
We are pretty set for the next year on tomato sauce. I make it plain, then I can add spices when I cook with it to flavor. It can be used in pasta dishes, Mexican dishes, pizza, or added to homemade soups and stews.
Years ago I had a very large garden and made the sauce this same way and it worked well. This is when my kiddos were all little and we literally lived off of our garden produce, fruit trees and berry bushes. Times were hard and that large garden was a life saver! I am thankful I learned to can what we grew.
I have really enjoyed my days at home cooking down the tomatoes into sauce. I really am a home body, even though I am working a couple of part-time jobs now. But my days at home are my favorite.
Pictures of my canned goods will follow in the next couple of weeks when it is all done and said. I am thanking God for the blessing of our garden harvest.

I have been so bad about blogging lately. I am working more these days and I do get tired for some odd reason. Also been spending lots of time in my studio...it had been ignored for months and was a mess...but it is looking much better. So maybe I can actually have room to create in there now. Enough about me, the photo here is our darling grandson, Noah. Isn't he so cute? He's a very nice person as well. We are so proud of him. Can't wait until they get moved to Colorado so they can be closer to us. It will still be a good 15 hour or so drive for us, but it is closer than Fairbanks!
Noah and his family will all be here for Christmas this year. Yippee! I love having my family home for the Holidays.

Preserving Is Good

Like in this poster I have been puttin' up goods from the garden. I can't find my canner, though, so I have been makin' do without it.
I just used a large enamel ware pot for heating the jars and then for the water bath. The tomatoes in my garden are yellow. They are called Golden Girls. But when made into tomato sauce it turns red. So we will have lotsa' sauce for makin' spaghetti, pizza, Mexican dishes, and soups. I have not canned for many years, it feels good to be puttin' up my own food.

Whilst cleaning out under the porch/deck I came upon a bag of tatter sacks that I forgot I had. I got them some years ago from a local farmer. The idea was to use them for the grand kids to have potato sack races...up to this point this has not happened. But my hope is that they will be used for this someday.
I did notice a bit of a musty smell when I discovered the sacks, so took out my galvanized tub and filled it with water and began washing them up. Here they are hanging on the line drying out-now they will be ready when the time comes to have those tatter sack races.

Yeah, it's me...lookin' kinda frumpy here, oh yeah, I am kinda frumpy, what was I thinkin'? In the back corner of my booth waitin' for customers to walk up the hill after the opening cow-bell ringing.

Vintage Barn Vendors Tea

This tea is put on by Rolaine Hopper of The Vintage Barn Antique Sale, held in Rathdrum, Idaho. She and Sharon did a great job of displaying food and setting up the yard. There were three of us who did demos on what we make. So we leanred how to make a birds nest, a glass glitter crown, and a paper tape mannequin. So fun. Nice to see old friends and meet some new ones. Looking forward to the show being a great success.

This old rack held the dishes we used for our food at the vendor tea today. There were a variety of plates, cup and saucers to choose from...all vintage, of course.
